Can cat litter be disposed of in organic waste or compost?

Generally, it is possible to add clumping as well as non-clumping litter to the compost. However, evidence has only been confirmed in large-scale composting plants where organic waste with cat litter is loosened up and aerated . In addition, water is bound inside promoting the rotting process. However, the temperatures developed in these large-scale composting plants are so high that germs are killed. Garden compost does not reach this temperature range, i.e. it cannot be ensured that all bacteria is killed. Therefore, disposing of used litter in the garden compost is for hygienic reasons not recommended. Disposing it with the organic waste that ends up in a large-scale composting plan is possible and the best alternative. Just contact the relevant authorities in your local community or the responsible recycling company.
